Seamless Integration with Commvault, Storware and Coriolis: Virtuozzo Hybrid Infrastructure 6.3

We’re excited to announce the release of Virtuozzo Hybrid Infrastructure 6.3, a significant update to our production-ready OpenStack cloud platform. This version introduces new features to enhance disaster recovery, streamline backup management, improve storage capabilities, and optimize Kubernetes networking.

  • With Virtuozzo Hybrid Infrastructure 6.3, you’ll benefit from technical integrations with Commvault for backup management, and Storware and Coriolis for disaster recovery
  • This version also adds external Fibre Channel storage support, and validated integration of our S3 storage system with OpenText Vertica, the analytical database
  • Plus, the ability to update Virtuozzo Storage without VM migration, and production support for Cilium CNI in Kubernetes

Read on for a detailed breakdown of these new features and how they can elevate your cloud operations!

Seamless Backup with Commvault Integration

Commvault, a leading data protection platform, is now fully supported as a backup solution for Virtuozzo Hybrid Infrastructure. This integration allows customers to centralize and simplify backup management across their environments while leveraging the powerful capabilities of Commvault, which supports a wide range of virtualization platforms, including OpenStack.

This new backup option ensures that enterprises can protect their virtual machines and data with confidence, using an industry-proven solution.

Disaster Recovery Solutions: Storware and Cloudbase Coriolis Integrations

Virtuozzo Hybrid Infrastructure 6.3 expands disaster recovery options by supporting Storware Backup and Recovery and Cloudbase Coriolis. These third-party solutions provide robust disaster recovery capabilities for virtual machines, offering customers flexibility in how they protect critical workloads.

By integrating Storware and Coriolis, customers can now use Virtuozzo Hybrid Infrastructure for critical workloads that require continuous protection from infrastructure outages.

Fibre Channel Storage Support

With Virtuozzo Hybrid Infrastructure 6.3, we now support external Fibre Channel (FC) storage in addition to existing NFS and iSCSI storage options, providing greater flexibility and enabling customers to make the most of their existing storage investments. Fibre Channel support is available through OpenStack Cinder drivers, further extending the platform’s versatility in handling different storage types.

S3 Storage Integration with OpenText Vertica

Virtuozzo Hybrid Infrastructure now has seamless integration with OpenText Vertica, a high-performance analytical database with a massively scalable architecture.

During our validation testing using the TPC-DS benchmark, we confirmed full compatibility between Vertica in Eon Mode and Virtuozzo S3 storage. This integration enables customers to efficiently store and analyze vast amounts of data with the combined scalability of Vertica’s Eon Mode and the robust, high-performance S3 object storage offered by Virtuozzo.

Virtuozzo Storage Updates without VM Migration

In this release, we've introduced the ability to update Virtuozzo Storage mountpoints without the need for virtual machine (VM) migration. This feature reduces operational disruptions during storage updates, eliminating the need to put nodes into maintenance mode or perform live migrations.

While live migration can still cause brief downtime, this enhancement ensures that storage components can be updated seamlessly, minimizing interruptions and maintaining high availability of workloads.

Performance Improvements with Q35 Chipset

In Virtuozzo Hybrid Infrastructure 6.3, we’ve made the Q35 virtual machine chipset the default for all new virtual machines, delivering enhanced performance and better compatibility, particularly with thin-provisioned volumes.

While Virtuozzo has supported virtio-blk volume type for many years, thin provisioning for these volumes is available only with the Q35 chipset. This advancement allows customers to benefit from improved performance while minimizing storage consumption.

Additional CPU Models

We have also added support for additional CPU models, ensuring compatibility and optimization for these processor generations, including:

  • SapphireRapids
  • EPYC-Genoa
  • EPYC-Milan
  • EPYC-Rome

Kubernetes Enhancements: Cilium CNI Support

Starting with Kubernetes 1.30, Cilium CNI is now the default network plugin for Kubernetes clusters within Virtuozzo Hybrid Infrastructure. Cilium offers superior network visibility, security and scalability compared to Flannel, and allows self-service users to manage Kubernetes networking with greater flexibility and control.

Full Release Notes

Virtuozzo Hybrid Infrastructure 6.3 also introduces several other updates, including incremental backups to optimize storage efficiency, and additional virtualization enhancements. For the full list of all new features, improvements and fixes, please refer to our Release Notes documentation.

How to Upgrade

Go to the SETTINGS > UPDATE section of your admin panel and initiate the upgrade process.

Note: An automated reboot of the nodes will be performed one at a time to complete the upgrade. During the reboot, the storage service and the admin panel may be unavailable on cluster configurations that don’t have redundancy of services or/and data.
