Issue date: 2022-02-03
Applies to: Virtuozzo Server 9
Virtuozzo Advisory ID: VZA-2022-005
1. Overview
The purpose of Virtuozzo Server 9 alpha is to demonstrate the work in progress. The alpha version offers a few new features and supports creating virtual machines and containers with a limited number of guest operating systems.
2. New Features
- The alpha version is based on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9 Beta as well as 5.14.x Linux kernels, QEMU 6.0.x, libvirt 7.6.x.
- Supported guest operating systems for creating new containers and virtual machines are: VzLinux 7 and 8, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 and 8, CentOS 7, AlmaLinux 8, Debian 10, Ubuntu 18.04 LTS and 20.04 LTS. Additionally, these guest operating systems are supported in virtual machines only: Microsoft Windows Server 2016, 2019, and 2022. Migrated containers and virtual machines with older guest operating systems should continue to work.
- XFS is now the default file system for containers.
- QCOW2 disk images can be used as container virtual disks.
- The dispatcher component is now optional and not installed by default as are the ‘prl*’ tools like ‘prlctl’. The primary API for managing virtual environments is now libvirt. The tools for managing virtual environments are now ‘virsh’ and ‘virt-install’. The Parallels SDK as well as the ‘prl*’ tools can be installed for backward compatibility.
3. Known Issues
- Virtual machine snapshots may not work.
- Backups are not implemented yet.
